We are a Wisconsin non-profit organization working towards our 501(c)(3) certification. Our mission is to collect and preserve historical information and items of Elton, WI, including the Elton School Building and Grounds.

History

Elton, WI is a quiet community located in the Evergreen Township of Langlade County. It is 16 miles east of Antigo, WI and 8 miles west of White Lake, WI.

The village of Elton is named for Elton C. Larzelere, whose father Charles was instrumental in the organization of Langlade County in 1879. In 1886, Charles and a few others secured permission from the Langlade County Board to create the town of Elton from part of Langlade Township. The first Elton Township meeting was held in 1887 at the home of Charles Larzelere. Mr. Larzelere passed away in 1923 at the age of 81.

The Elton Schoolhouse you see on the right was constructed in 1912. It was built as a three room graded schoolhouse and was in use until the 1950s when they consolidated with White Lake.

This is now the official meeting place of the Elton School Historical Preservation Society and is one of the few buildings left standing of the bustling town you see in the photo above. One of the school room chalkboards has been signed by residents and people who attended Elton School as a child. We are working hard to preserve this wonderful piece of history, as well as adding more artifacts and information along the way.
